Often, when I’m high above the clouds, en-route to somewhere in a plane, I begin having existential thoughts. I start to question myself, my life, my decisions – which I do regularly, but somehow the feeling is more intense when I’m in an airplane. Meditating comes more easily as well.
One of my recent flights was incredibly turbulent from start to landing, prompting me to check for the life vest below my seat. Not that it would have helped at all. I tried to relax and trust, while comforting the terrified lady next to me.
If this was the end, I’d die happy, I thought to myself. I’ve lived life fully, not holding back. I’ve stayed in my integrity, tried everything and had no regrets. That doesn’t mean that I’ve done everything right – not at all – but I’ve dared to make mistakes. To step into confrontation when necessary. I’ve dared to not be likeable.
Less half-heartedness. More fullness.
I’m sad to see how often some people get in their own way. Leading their own lives half-heartedly, getting too caught up in their thoughts, putting life off, avoiding confrontation or even holding back their love because any of these things could be, somehow, painful or uncomfortable.
Spirituality, for me, doesn’t just mean looking inside in order to become calmer, clearer or more loving. It means being awake. Meeting life head-on. Taking chances. Being courageous even when coming up against resistance or our own boundaries. That’s what keeps us alive! We’re constantly looking for excuses not to live life to the fullest. We’re lacking the time, the money or the guts.Click To Tweet
